Date:June 1963

Description:The photograph is looking north along the Trent & Mersey Canal alongside Twyford's Cliffe Vale Works. The bridge in the centre carries Shelton New Road (previously called Newcastle Road) over the canal. Immediately behind is lock 38 on the Trent & Mersey with the derelict building of George Ridgway & Sons flour and corn mill alongside.

On the towpath side is the clay and coal wharf of Twyford's factory, with access doors to the works. The works, apart from two bottle ovens and the facade, has been largely demolished and replaced with apartments.
