Description:This photograph was taken from the corner of Botteslow Street and Commercial Road in Hanley. Commercial Road runs across the bottom of the photograph and becomes Nelson Road. Picton Street was one of several streets which ran between Waterloo Street and Commercial Road lined with terraced houses built between 1880 and 1900. The white building in the background is on Waterloo Street. The houses on Picton Street are typical of Byelaw housing, with each house having its own toilet in a separate building, in this case, at the end of the yard. The single storey extensions at the back all appear to have chimneys.
The Victoria County History notes that in Hanley there were "good working class houses...with two bedrooms, two dwelling rooms and a back kitchen, and a fair sized yard". All the buildings, except those on Waterloo Street have been demolished.
