Description:The camera is looking southwards along Newport Lane with Malkin's Encaustic Tile Works on the right. The large square building in the background is one of the rolling mills at Shelton steel works.

Malkin & Edge (tilemakers) were founded in 1866, although Malkin, Edge and Benjamin Cork had a long history of pottery and tile manufacture in Burslem. The company eventually operated under the name Malkin Tileworks Company at the Encaustic works in Newport Lane until they were absorbed into H & R Johnson in 1968. Malkin's were well known for geometric encaustic floor tiles as well as colourful Art Nouveau wall and frieze tiles. The end wall of the works has a classic tile design.

The works was next door to the Newport Pottery and Royal Staffordshire Pottery at the southern end of Newport Lane. Today the sites have been redeveloped for housing, with one road named Malkin Way.
