Description:Longport Gas Works was on Canal Street. Originally established as the Burslem and Tunstall Gas Company, Longport was the man gas-making station. Later it was taken over by the City of Stoke on Trent Gas Department who manufactured gas at their Etruria works, and used Longport as one of four holding station from where gas was distributed to the city. The holder on the right is a telescopic holder, rising and falling as gas is pumped in or out. The building in the centre of the photograph is "Glentaff", the offices and residence of the gas engineer. The site has been cleared and in use as an industrial estate.
