Description:the photograph shows the back of Dunn & Bennett's Dalehall Works on the Trent & Mersey canal in Middleport.
Dunn & Bennett started producing earthenware and ironstone in Burslem in the 1870s. The Dalehall site was the last works occupied by the company before becoming part of the Orme Street works of the Steelite hotel ware group. Dunn & Bennett specialised in patent unchippable plates, pots and dishes used in hotels and on board ship.

Dalehall Works was on the Trent & Mersey Canal at the bottom of Stubbs Street, off Newcastle Street in Middleport. Stubbs Street today is just a remnant, most being built over by the Steelite works. The canal side location was important for the import of bulky raw materials and export of the finished products. The terraced houses towards the left hand edge of the photograph were on Bridgewater Street, now cleared. Just in front of the houses, the building with the square tower still stands alongside the Steelite works.
