Description:The Sytch was the hill up to Burslem from Brownhills. The photograph is looking north east with Westport Road (formerly Liverpool Road) in the foreground. What is now Federation Road would be going off to the right just by the two white buildings in the right corner. The building on the corner (of Johnson Street) was the Liverpool Arms Hotel, later Bowbell Pottery. Liverpool Road ran north to Tunstall and then onto the port of Liverpool and was the main route for pottery bound for the American market. The line of houses beyond have been cleared for housing and a school. Behind the houses is a large marl pit (now filled in) and beyond that the chimneys and ovens of Tunstall.
On the skyline, right in the centre of the photograph, is the spire of Christ Church, Tunstall. The spire was demolished, leaving just the tower, 8 years after the photograph was taken. The spire on the extreme left is St Mary's Tunstall, again demolished. To the right hand side are the copper domes of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church on Queen's Avenue, Tunstall.
