Description:Looking in a southerly direction from Hollywall Lane, Goldenhill, towards Westport Lake. Goldendale ironworks furnaces are in the centre of the photograph with Westport Lake to the right. On the skyline in the centre is the spire of Holy Trinity Church in Hartshill and near the left edge, the spire of Holy Trinity, Northwood. The spoil tips of Sneyd and Hanley Deep Pit collieries are appearing through the smoke from the ironworks.
Goldendale ironworks dates from the 1840s and was owned by the Williamson family. It was close to both the Trent & Mersey Canal and the main railway line that ran up the Fowlea Brook Valley. The works closed in the late 1960s and the site has been redeveloped for industry.
