The waste tips have been reclaimed and redeveloped. The Chatterly Whitfield tip has been landscaped and forms part of the Whitfield Valley Nature Reserve. Norton Colliery has been landscaped and redeveloped as mixed housing, retail and open space. The land in the immediate foreground is the site of the Excel Academy School. On the horizon to the right is the higher ground of Norton Lane.
