Description:The view from the south end of the up (southbound) platform of Stoke Station. The photograph was taken before electrification in 1967, and before the four tracks were reduced to two. On the right of the platform are a line of trolleys ready for Royal Main parcels and letters, and further down, laden trolleys probably awaiting the next train. At the time of the photograph, the railways had a virtual monopoly of mail and newspaper traffic. Halfway down is a common feature of railway platforms: the station bookstall and newsstand.

The passenger overbridge linking the up and down platforms is in the top left of the photograph. On the left, at the end of the down platform is the bay platform, for northbound stopping trains. To the left of the down platform was the goods yard, now a car park.
