Description:The photograph shows an intermittent coal fired beehive oven in the process of rebuilding and refurbishment. The kiln was at John Caddick & Sons' Spoutfield brick and tile works on the corner of Brick Kiln Lane and Shelton New Road. The oven itself is beehive shaped with a ring of firing holes (mouths) around the perimeter. Usually they were made of more heat resistant refractory brick (whiter bricks). Iron bands (called bonts) were bolted to the outside of the oven to support the structure during firing. The ends of a band can be seen at the top of the brickwork.
This type of oven was described as intermittent because it was loaded, fired and emptied periodically, as opposed to modern continuous firing ovens.
Modern housing now occupies the site of the brick & tile works.
