Description:This is an old photograph of the original Congregational Chapel on the corner of Caroline Street and Middle Cross Street, erected in 1819. This building was razed to the ground in 1905 and the present brick built structure erected in its place. This chapel resulted from a secession from the parish church after the departure of a minister. The Independent Chapel opened in 1820 with a membership of 17. By 1841, the Sunday School had over 200 attendees. The round date tablet (1819) on the front was moved to the side of the building on Middle Cross Street and is still in place.
