Description:Pearlware dark blue printed jugs with transfer printed design 'La Fayette at Franklin's Tomb'. Height 140mm and 115mm. The Marquis de La Fayette (1757-1834) was a French General and politician who allied himself with the American revolutionary cause. La Fayette left France for America in 1777 to help the colonists, distinguishing himself at the battle of Yorktown in 1782. His return visit to the USA in 1824, by invitation of Congress, aroused great interest and inspired many printed wares for export to America. The two jugs were excavated at St. Paul's Church, Burslem in 1974.
