Description:At the 1831 elections, few men's opinions seemed to count for as much as those of Josiah Wedgwood II.
Taking sides
During 1831, Wedgwood was rumoured to be siding with Richard Edensor Heathcote, who was MP for Coventry between 1826 and 1830.
Supporters of rival candidate John Davenport, a pottery manufacturer, were alarmed enough to produce this notice to deny that this was the case.
They emphasise that Wedgwood had taken up a position of "perfect neutrality."
In fact, Wedgwood himself was ultimately returned as MP for Stoke-on-Trent in 1832.
