Description:Pottery factory interior taken at Swinnerton’s Ltd, Stoke-on-Trent.
This is a photograph of the mouldmaking shop, probably taken at the Vulcan Works, Slippery Lane, Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent.
The man nearest the camera is wiping a master mould with a wet sponge.
A great deal of pottery was (and still is) cast or pressed from moulds. From one mould multiple pieces of ware of the exact same shape and size could be made.
This meant that mouldmakers possessed a highly valued skill.
Taken from the Gladstone Pottery Museum Photographic Collection.
