Description:Pottery factory interior showing a china thrower and his assistant making cups. It is a two-stage process.

  • Firstly the thrower throws rough linings, which can be seen on the bench in front of him.

  • He then puts the lining into a revolving plaster mould and re-throws it to get the cup shape.

  • A rib was often used to shape the inside of the cup but it is unclear if the man in the picture is using one.

Taken at Sutherland China, Normacot Road, Longton, Stoke-on-Trent.

Taken from the Gladstone Pottery Museum Photographic Collection. This photograph is part of the collections at Stoke-on-Trent Museums.
