Description:Matthew was born in 1885 in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire. He married Florence Alice Leadbetter in 1905. He enlisted into the Royal Engineers on 10th October 1914 and a year later was serving in France. In 1919 Matthew was declared medically unfit and it was recommended that he be discharged from the army. Matthew was awarded The Victory Medal, The British War Medal and 1915 Star.
