Description:George was born 15th March 1901 in Drayton Street, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire. George originally enlisted at Burslem on the 8th February 1919 into the North Staffordshire Regiment. He left the army in 1931. Later, during WWII, George lied about his age and altered his birth certificate to join the Pioneer Corps so that he could fight for his country. Years later when he was due to retire, he had trouble proving his real age and had to obtain a new birth certificate. George married Evelyn Dora Chesters on 22nd October 1921. They spent all their years in Newcastle-under-Lyme until his death on 15th June 1976. George was awarded The 1939-1945 Star, The Defence Medal and The War Medal 1939-1945.
