Description:A child pottery worker hand jiggering for a bowl or dishmaker who is "jollying" the ware.

Jollying is the process of shaping ware inside a mould with a combination of shaping tools and centrifugal force.

Steam jiggers replaced these manual machines from around the 1890s as child labour became increasingly restricted by law.

Taken in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire.
