Description:Lewis's Arcade and 1935 store on Stafford Street. This was the view south along Stafford Street from the corner of New Hall Street. On the left hand edge is the "new" Lewis's store under construction. This would extend to cover the arcade and was the site of the old Bishop & Stonier Pottery. The low building is the Art Deco Arcade and, beyond Lamb Street, the Art Deco 1935 Lewis's store, due for demolition. Farther down is Miles Bank.

Lewis's Arcade was a first for the City. It gave shoppers the first indoor pedestrian shopping "street" with a range of shops and a cafe. This and the larger department store had been built in 1935 on the site of Hanley's first department store, McIlroy's.
