Date:August 1964

Description:This is the view east along Newcastle Lane up the hill towards Penkhull. The photograph was taken from the roundabout at the junction of Hilton Road (left) and Harpfield Road (to the right). Behind the camera, Newcastle Lane continues down into the valley to join the A34 at Knapper's Gate.

On the right hand side is the top of the spire of St Thomas's Church, Penkhull and nearer the camera the buildings of Thistley Hough High School. The school started as a grammar school for girls in 1938. The original buildings, in the Art Deco style, were demolished and a new school built on the same site. This is now Thistley Hough Academy.
