Description:The Mount was built by Josiah Spode II around 1803-04. At this time Josiah Spode was the most successful china manufacturer in the area and he bought 17 acres of farmland between Penkhull and Hartshill as the site for the biggest mansion in Stoke. Prior to this time most pottery factory owners lived in a house on the factory site. Spode was also responsible for building rows of workmen's houses in the village and Penkhull New Road. The Mount became the North Staffordshire School for the Blind and Deaf in 1897. It was the first residential school for deaf children founded under the Elementary Education Act of 1883. In 2003 it became the site for the Willows Primary School, the name coming from Spode's willow pattern pottery. The photograph was taken from Greatbatch Avenue and shows the north side of the grade II listed building.
