Grenville Pottery, Tunstall

Description:Grenville Pottery was between Watergate Street and George Street in Tunstall in, roughly, the area now occupied by St Mary's Church of England Primary School. The photograph was taken looking northwards from the area around St Mary's Church, now demolished, from the corner of Hammond Street (formerly Lime Street). The road immediately in front of the works was George Street (later called Vaughan Street) and the road with the street lamp on the corner was Booth Street (later Boothfield Street). The entire area has been cleared and is now crossed by Harewood Street and is the site of St Mary's Primary School.

The Grenville Pottery manufactured earthenware and had gone out of production by 1964. In 1912 the George Street Pottery was operated by Smith & Hodgkinson who advertised themselves as " largest manufacturers of toilet sets and jugs".
