Description:The ruins are the engine house and chimney of a iron works blast engine. The photograph was taken near Copp Lane alongside the Trent and Mersey Canal looking south east towards Burslem. The tower of St Joseph's RC Church stands put to the right of the engine house. Either side is the skyline of Burslem. A blast (or blowing) engine was a stationary engine used to pump large quantities of air into blast furnaces. The Chatterley Iron Company built blast furnaces in the Ravensdale area in the late 1900s. The furnace had ceased working by 1900 but the engine houses stood derelict until demolition in the 1980s.
