Description:The California Works was operated by the locomotive manufacturer Kerr Stuart & Co. Kerr Stuart moved into the works in the 1890s when they took over another railway and tram manufacturer, Hartley, Arnoux and Fanning. This photograph was taken from just off Whieldon Road with the main railway line running between the camera and the works. The works have been demolished.
Kerr Stuart built a wide range of locomotives for industry and for overseas railways in Argentina, India, China and Southern Africa. The company ceased production in the 1930s.
