Description:Tanner's fireclay pit was at the end of Purbeck Street (previously George Street), just off Leek New Road in Cobridge. This photograph shows the southern face of the pit, with the houses along Sneyd Street in the background. The spoil tips are now part of Hanley's Central Forest Park.
Although not clear, the rocks exposed in the pit are the Blackband series, the strata at the top of the Coal Measures. These contain coal, ironstone and clay. At the time of the photograph, the pit seems to have been used as a dump for oil drums. The pit has been filled in and the area a mix of open space and playing fields.
