Description:The view is from the Roylance Street/Audley Street area looking northwest across Peake's old marl pit. To the right are the backs of the terraced houses at the western end of Nash-Peake Street. Thomas Peake was making tiles in the Watergate Street are from the 1820s. In 1858 the company produced over 1.5 million paving bricks and 7000,000 building bricks. By the 1900s, Peake's were one of the largest brick and tile makers in the country.
The abandoned marl pit was then used as a waste tip (shraff tip), for the pottery industry. The land has been reclaimed and is a mixture of industrial land and open space.
