Description:These are the backs of properties on Chelson Street (was Bagnall Street until the 1950s) in Longton as seen from St James' Churchyard. The ovens and chimneys belonged to the Stanley Works operated until 1960s by the New Chelsea China Company. From 1961 to 1969, the works were occupied by Grosvenor China Ltd.
The two bottle ovens in the foreground have been demolished. The top of the oven just visible in the distance is on Short Street, part of the Enson Works. The left hand side of the old Stanley works still stand, no longer a potworks. It was said that in the 1950s the streets around St James' Church had the highest density of potworks of any part of the city.
