Description:A steelworker protects himself behind a shield and leather apron. He is taking the core temperature in a Kaldo steel making furnace prior to the molten steel being poured at the concast (continuous casting) plant.

Shelton site was constantly developed over its lifespan. As coal was only suitable for producing pig iron they switched to coke for fuel in 1906 to enable them to produce high quality steel. Ironmaking came to an end in June 1978.
