Description:This large cargo carrying narrow boat finds itself foundering high and dry at Stoke Wharf. The Trent and Mersey canal passes quietly by, leaving the boat redundant.
Narrow boats such as this would have been used to transport coal to potbanks throughout the Potteries. During the early part of the nineteenth century it would have been the only means of transporting heavy goods in large quantities. Photographed by Alan Self
