Mossfield Colliery was sunk in the early 1800s and closed in 1963, a year before the photograph was taken. The colliery had an unfortunate history with two major accidents in 1889 and 1940, resulting in 77 deaths. Two shafts, over 1250 feet deep, produced household, steam and industrial coal. The spoil tip was landscaped in the 1970s and is part of Berryhill Fields and an industrial estate.
