Description:This is the Sylvan Works of Shaw and Copestake on Normacot Road in Longton. Chadwick Street goes off to the left, with the derelict Old Sea Lion Inn on the corner. The photograph was taken from the corner of Gower Street looking east with the top of St James' Church tower in the distance. The site of the inn is now Longton Spiritualist Church and the Sylvan Works has been demolished.
Shaw & Copestake manufactured "fancy earthenware" (animal models and other novelties, posy bowls and flower vases) at their Normacot Road works from 1894 until 1962, using the "SylvaC" trade name from the 1930s. The company was liquidated in 1982.
Parked on the corner is an early 1950s model Morris Oxford saloon car.
