Description:This photograph was taken from the bridge over the Trent & Mersey Canal, looking east towards Hem Heath. On the far side of the road is the old wheelwright's shop and smithy which had become a petrol station. The photograph was taken before the widening of the carriageway.

Cleveland petrol stations originally sold Cleveland Discol, a fuel made by blending petroleum and alcohol. Esso took over the company in the 1930s and in the 1970s, Cleveland Stations were rebranded as Esso. Although still a petrol station, the original buildings have been demolished.
