Description:The Black mLion Inn stands at the junction of London Road and Newcastle Road (where it becomes Stone Road). On the beam over the window in the left hand gable is the inscription "B Co Ltd" and "AD1899". This is thought to be Charles Bunting & Co, a brewery in Uttoxeter. The white plaque at the bottom of the chimney has a hand a laurel wreath: this ws the trade mark of Bunting's Brewery. The company was taken over Parker's Brewery (Burslem) in 1929.
London Road, off to the right, was "built" in 1791 to connect Newcastle Road with the Derby to Newcastle Road at what is now Campbell Place in Stoke. It replaced a hilly side road, now Trent Valley Road, with a flatter, more direct route. The Black Lion was certainly here at that time.
To the left of the Black Lion, the line of houses is now the site of a school and the junction is now controlled by traffic lights.
