Description:The camera is looking west along Newcastle Lane down towards the A34.The photograph was taken from the roundabout at the junction of Hilton road and Harpfield Road. Behind the camera, Newcastle Lane continues uphill to Penkhull. In the distance are houses on the higher ground of Clayton. At the bottom of the road, in an area known as Spittles, was a toll house and gate at the junction of the road from Penkhull and the London Road (A34). This was Knapper's gate.

To the right of the photograph is the Harplands Hospital site and the one time Ambulance Station on Hilton Road. The houses on then left were built after the Second World War. The learner coming up to the roundabout is driving a Hillman Imp, a small rear engined car built by the Rootes Group. They were made between 1963 and 1976. It was the first British car to have a mainly aluminium engine and was built as a competitor to the Mini.
