Description:In the centre of the photograph are a group of three cottages (numbers 289 to 293) on Hartshill Road which form part of a longer terrace. At the far end is number 287 which was the former Hartshill Institute. The red brick cottages date from 1859 and were designed by George Gilbert Scott and paid for by Herbert Minton. They were housing for some of Minton's workers. The three cottages are grade II listed buildings. The closest building, much changed and now a shop, is of the same age.
The Hartshill Institute, dating from 1859, was designed as a "Working Mans Association" with a reading room, lecture room and space for classes in " reading, writing, arithmetic, grammar and geography etc.". It was also a venue for "rational amusements". It later became the home of Newcastle Players Workshop. the building is grade II listed. These form part of a larger group of Minton sponsored buildings further along Hartshill Road.
