Description:Looking northwards from Etruria Road close to the bottom of Basford Bank towards Wolstanton Colliery. On the skyline are the houses in May Bank, built from the 1920s onwards.
The foreground is a jumble of buildings and spoil and shraff tips belonging to the Eturia Tileries. Here the red brick clay, Etruria Marl, outcrops on the surface. Today this is a retail park. The winding towers belong to the modernised Wolstanton Colliery, which connected underground with pits in Sneyd and Hanley. At one time this was the deepest shaft in Western Europe at 3759 feet. The colliery was connected directly to Shelton Steel works (off to the right) by conveyor belts. Closed in 1985, the colliery site is now a retail park.
