Description:This photograph was taken from Lawrence Street and shows the rear of the Coalbrook and Washington Potteries which fronted onto College Road in Shelton. The buildings date from the 1880s.

Here the bottle oven chimney stacks rise through the roof of the factory. These are stack ovens, where a row of ovens are grouped together under one roof. To the left, the square kiln might have been a calcining oven for flint or bone. The range has been demolished.

The Washington works, originally part of Wardle & co and then Swinnerton's, produced a range of hotel, domestic and fancy ware. In 1994 it became the home of Just Mugs Ltd. Coalbrook Pottery was also known as the Cleveland Works and produced earthenware.
