Date:November 1963

Description:The three bottle ovens belonged to an earthenware manufactory behind Purbeck Street (Formerly George Street) in Cobridge. Leek New Road is off to the left of the photograph. Bert Bentley, the photographer, questioned whether they were once part of the Argyll Pottery, operated by William Hulme until 1954. The Argyle works was further along Leek New Road: this works is unnamed on maps.

These ovens are more conical than bottle shaped, they have a "straight batter". A bottle shaped oven has a "church batter". At the base of the oven are the firemouths for stoking or "baiting".The works has been demolished and later became the site of Bourne's Fireplaces.
