Description:To the right is the eastern end of the old Town Hall in Burslem and beyond the civic gardens, the shops on Market Place. The photograph was taken from Wedgwood Street. Where the gardens are was the site of the Meat Market (The Shambles) and in more recent times, the Ceramica pavilion.
The meat market was built in the early 1830s and demolished in 1957. This was also the site of Wedgwood's first potworks. The bass of the kilns are reproduced in the gardens.
Beyond the garden, the blue building is The Leopard, an 18th century inn famous for being the meeting place of Josiah Wedgwood and James Brindley in 1765, which led to the creation of the Trent & Mersey Canal. Today it is a grade II listed building.
