Description:Port Vale Street runs westwards off Newcastle Street towards the old Port Vale Wharf on the Trent & Mersey Canal in Middleport. This wharf closed in the early 1900s. The photograph shows a mix of derelict workshops awaiting demolition with an original street gas lamp standard. Demolition of houses and workshops in these streets running off Newcastle Street started in the late 1950s. Today it is an area of housing. Port Vale Street leads to Yale Street and the Steelite factory.
