Description:Kirk Street runs northwest off Ford Green Road in Smallthorne, from where this photograph was taken. At the bottom is Coseley Street. Until the 1950s, Kirk Street was Church Street and Edward Street became Coseley Street. The top part of Kirk Street, down to Camp Road, dates from the late 19th century, the rest was developed in the 1920s. The terraced houses largely still stand. Modern housing has infilled the space on the left behind the Reliable Stores shop.

Reliable Stores was chain of furniture shops (and hair stylists!) based in Burslem with six branches in North Staffordshire. Is the lady crossing the road sporting a bouffant hair style? On the opposite side was Hulse's corner shop. Mrs Hulse is listed as a " general dealer". Both stores have changed uses.
