Description:The house in the photograph stood on Clanway Lane, now Adams Avenue in Newfield, Tunstall. In the background are the workings of Clanway Brickworks, adjacent to Clanway Farm. They were part of the Berry Hill Brickworks Company.
The 19th century house still stands but the area behind is now crossed by James Brindley Way (A527). Towards the left edge of the photograph, and just appearing out of the mist, is the spoil tip of Chatterley Whitfield Colliery.

Clanway Farm, which stands a quarter of a mile from this house, has been in existence since the late 1600s. It was formerly owned by Kate Bean whose granddaughter, Margaret Sutton, has kindly provided additional information.
