Description:The camera is looking south from Chatterley Road over Westport towards Wolstanton. The spire of St Margaret's Church in Wolstanton is to the right with the twin towers of Wolstanton Colliery in the centre. Further to the left are the buildings of Shelton iron & steel works. Westport Lake lies in a subsidence flash. The present day lake with its nature reserve was opened in 1974, but the lake was a recreational area in the late 19th century. A Sentinel advert in the 1890 encouraged Potteries people to ..."come and see then little steam launch on Westport Lake and some forty rowing boats ". the lake was " so safe as all should be knowing .....and only five minutes walk from Longport railway station." By the 1960s, the site was surrounded by potteries waste (shraff). The area around the lake has been used for housing.
