The original quarry in the photograph (now filled in) had a grinding mill for silica stone. The rock is a variety of Millsone Grit known as Chatsworth Grit and was formed between 325 and 315 million year ago (Namurian age) at the time when this part of Staffordshire was a large river delta. The gritstone was used both for building and as an abrasive.
