The Sutton Dwellings Trust was founded under the will of William Richard Sutton in 1894. Sutton ran the first door to door parcel company in London and built up a large fortune through the business. He died in 1900, and left £1,500,000 for the provision of low-rent dwellings in London and other towns including Stoke. The names of neighbouring roads on the estate, Kyffin Road, Shelley Road and Taylor Road commemorate the names of some of the trustees of the charity. The Trust also built houses in Trent Vale and is still active in the city.
