Description:This view south along London Road shows the line of the now filled in Newcastle under Lyme Canal which linked Newcastle with the Trent & Mersey Canal in Stoke. To the left is Boothen School and the spire of All Saints Church is visible through the trees.

The Newcastle Canal opened in 1800 and although never really successful, was eventually taken over by the North Staffordshire Railway. Closure began in the 1920s and it was finally closed in 1935 (apart from a short section in Stoke, used by Stoke Boat Club) and the whole route abandoned. Roads and buildings now cover the line of the canal.
