Description:A view along the Newcastle under Lyme Canal where it leaves the Trent & Mersey Canal in Stoke on Trent. The photograph is taken from the bridge at the junction with the Trent & Mersey: the bridge in the middle of the photograph carried Copeland Street over the Newcastle canal. To the left is the headquarters of the Stoke Boat Club with some members' cruisers moored. The four mile canal was completed by 1800 and finally abandoned in 1935 and filled in. The last section of the canal to survive was a 100 metre section used as moorings by the Stoke Boat Club in the 1970s. This disappeared with the building of the A500 Queensway. The canal was never a success and little used except by Spode, Minton and Wolfe whose Stoke pottery works were on the canal. The Civic Centre building stands on the site of the wharf at junction of the two canals.
