Date:1939 - 1945 (c.)

Description:A gas mask and holder dating from World War Two. This is a standard civilian issue mask. These were always provided in a plain card box with string for a shoulder strap. The tin holder shown here is likely to be a privately-purchased item as the card box could be easily damaged.

Forty million masks were distributed to the civilian population of Britain in 1939, amidst fears that gas would be used to attack the population.
