Description:Pearlware painted portrait bust. Height 320mm Revd. John Wesley (1703-1791) was an evangelist and the leader of Methodism. Originally a high churchman, he experienced a dramatic conversion and in 1738 Methodism was born. Methodism appealed especially to the working classes and many of his converts were potters. Enoch Wood modelled the bust of Wesley after meeting him in 1781. It was one of his most popular productions and was said to be the best likeness of Wesley.
