The Potteries once had its own airport, one of the first in the UK, and it was used by passengers on the route from Speke to London. It was in use from the 1920s and passengers could request that the 'plane land at Meir airfield to pick them up by informing the Railway Station Master at Meir Station. He would then listen for the pilot to radio him to ask if he had any passengers to pick up. An airline service by request stop!
During World War Two the airfield was used by American B-24 Liberator bombers.
